ἀεί The Root is ΑΕϜ ; cf. Lat. aevum, aetas, i. e. aeuitas.

always, for ever, Hom., etc.; often with other words of time, διαμπερὲς αἰεί, συνεχὲς αἰεί, ἐμμενὲς αἰεί, id=Hom.; ἀεὶ καθ᾽ ἡμέραν, καθ᾽ ἡμέραν ἀεί, ἀεὶ καὶ καθ᾽ ἡμέραν, ἀεὶ κατ᾽ ἐνιαυτόν, ἀεὶ διὰ βίου, etc., Plat., etc.; v. εἰσαεί:— ἀεὶ χρόνος eternity, Hdt., Plat.; οἱ ἀεὶ ὄντες the immortals, Xen., etc.:—but, αἰεὶ βασιλεύων the king for the time being, Hdt.; τοῖσι τούτων αἰεὶ ἐκγόνοισι to their descendants for ever, id=Hdt.
