ἀράσσω α euphon. , ῥάσσω, akin to ῥήσσω

I.to strike hard, smite, (Hom. only has it in the compds. ἀπ-, συν-αράσσω); of horses, ὁπλαῖς ἀρ. χθόνα Pind.; θύρας ἀρ. to knock furiously at the door, Eur.; ἀράσσειν στέρνα, κρᾶτα to beat the breast, the head, in mourning, Lat. plangere, Aesch., Eur.; ἄρασσε μᾶλλον strike harder, Aesch.; ἀρ. ὄψεις, βλέφαρα Soph.
2.c. dat. modi, ἀράσσειν ὀνείδεσι κακοῖς to throw with reproaches or threats, i. e. fling them wildly about, id=Soph.
II.Pass. to be dashed against, πρὸς τὰς πέτρας Hdt.; πέτραις Aesch.
