δόρυ n1 in attic Poets, gen. δορός from same Root as δρῦς

I.a stem, tree, Od.:—commonly a plank or beam, Hom.; δόρυ νήϊον a ship's plank, id=Hom.:— hence,
2.a ship is called δόρυ, like Lat. trabs, Aesch., Eur.
II.the shaft of a spear, Il.: then, generally, a spear, pike, Hom., etc.; εἰς δόρυ ἀφικνεῖσθαι to come within a spear's throw, Xen.; ἐπὶ δόρυ to the spear-side, i. e. the right hand, opp. to ἐπ᾽ ἀσπίδα, id=Xen.:—also, the pole of a standard, id=Xen.
2.metaph., δουρὶ κτεατίζειν to win wealth by the spear, il.; δορὶ ἑλεῖν Thuc.; in Trag. to express an armed force.
