μαίνομαι from Root ΜΑΝ

I.to rage, be furious, Hom.; μανείς the madman, Soph.: to be mad with wine, Od.:—of Bacchic frenzy, Il., Soph.; ὑπὸ τοῦ θεοῦ μ. to be driven mad by the god, Hdt.; τὸ μαίνεσθαι madness, Soph.; πλεῖν μαίνομαι more than madness, Ar.:—c. acc. cogn., μεμηνὼς οὐ σμικρὰν νόσον mad with no slight disease, Aesch.
2.of fire, to rage, riot, Il.; so, μαινομένη ἐλπίς Orac. ap. Hdt.; ἔρις Aesch., etc.
II.the aor1 act. ἔμηνα, in Causal sense, to madden, enrage, Eur., Xen.
