ναυτικός 1 ναύτης

I.seafaring, naval, ν. στρατός opp. to πεζός, Hdt.; ν. λεώς Aesch.; στόλος Soph.; ν. ἐρείπια wrecks of ships, Aesch.; ν. ἀναρχία among the seamen, Eur.:— τὸ ναυτικόν a navy, fleet, Hdt., Ar., etc.
2.of persons, skilled in seamanship, nautical, ναυτικοὶ ἐγένοντο became a naval power, Thuc.
3. ναυτική (sc. τέχνη) navigation, seamanship, Hdt.; so, τὰ ναυτικά Plat.;—but, τὰ ναυτικά, also, naval affairs naval power, Thuc., Xen.
II.at Athens, ναυτικόν technically meant money borrowed or lent on bottomry, Xen., etc.
