ὄνυξ 1

I.Lat. unguis, in Hom. only in pl. of the eagle's talons;— of human beings, a nail, Hes., Hdt., attic:—of horses and oxen, a hoof, Xen.—Special phrases, εἰς ἄκρους τοὺς ὄνυχας ἀφίκετο (sc. οἶνος) warmed me to my fingers' ends, Eur.; ὄνυχας ἐπ᾽ ἄκρους στάς on tiptoe, Lat. summis digitis, id=Eur.; ἐξ ἁπαλῶν ὀνύχων from childhood, Hor. de tenero ungui, Anth.; ὀδοῦσι καὶ ὄνυξι, i. e. in every possible way, Luc.
