a poet. title of honour, used chiefly in addressing goddesses or ladies:
1.= δέσποινα, mistress, queen, c. gen., πότνια θηρῶν (nom.) queen of wild beasts, Lat. potens ferarum, Il.; πότνια βελ́εων Pind.: absol., πότνι᾽ Ἐρινύς Aesch.; often in voc., πότνι᾽ Ἥρα id=Aesch.; πότνια (sc. Ἀθηναία) Ar.:—in pl. of the Eumenides, Hdt., Soph.; also of Demeter and Proserpine, Soph., etc.
2.as adj. revered, august, Hom.
