I.that which is laid down or established by custom, Lat. jus or fas, as opp. to lex, θέμις ἐστί 'tis meet and right, Lat. fas est, Hom.; ἣ θέμις ἐστί as 'tis right, as the custom is, id=Hom.; ἣ θέμις ἐστὶ γυναικός as is a woman's custom, Od.; so in attic, ὅ τι θέμις αἰνεῖν what it is right to praise, Aesch., etc.:—also indeclin., θέμις being used as acc., φασὶ θέμις εἶναι Plat., etc.
