υἱός 1

1.etc. A son, Lat. filius, Hom., etc.; υἱὸν ποιεῖσθαί τινα to adopt him as a son, Aeschin.; υἱεῖς ἄνδρες grown up sons, Dem.:—rarely of animals, NTest.
2.periphr., υἷες Ἀχαιῶν, for Ἀχαιοί, Il.; cf. παῖς.
Hom. sometimes makes the 1st syll. short, as if it were ὑός.
