2.the wintry quarter of the heavens, the north, Βορέας καὶ χ. Hdt.
II.wintry weather, a winter-storm, and generally a storm, Hom., Hdt., attic; χ. κατερράγη Hdt.; ἐπέπεσέ σφι χ. μέγας id=Hdt.; ὦρσε θεὸς χειμῶνα Aesch.; χ. νοτερός a storm of rain, Thuc.:— in pl., ὑπὸ τῶν χ. by means of the winter-storms, Hdt.
2.metaph., θεόσσυτος χ. a storm of calamity sent by the gods, Aesch.; δορὸς ἐν χειμῶνι in the storm of battle, Soph.; θολερῷ χ. νοσήσας, of the madness of Ajax, id=Soph.
