I.heroes elevated to the rank of gods after their death, and regarded as the patron deities of their country: “patrii Dii sunt, qui praesunt singulis civitatibus, ut Minerva Athenis, Juno Carthagini: Indigetes autem proprie sunt Dii ex hominibus facti, quasi in Diis agentes,Serv. ad Verg.
