I. Lit., the extreme south-eastern part of Italy, in the oldest geography of that country (afterwards the territory of the Bruttians and Lucanians): “Oenotria dicta est vel a vino optimo, quod in Italiā nascitur, vel ut Varro dicit ab Oenotro rege Sabinorum. Alii Itali fratrem Oenotrum tradunt ex Arcadiā in Italiam venisse cum Pelasgis et-eam sibi cognominem fuisse,” Serv. Verg. A. 1, 532.—
