capnĭas , ae, m., = καπνίας, smoky.
I. (Sc. οἶνος.) A kind of wine, Plin. 14, 3, 4, § 39.—
II. A precious stone of a smoky hue, of several varieties.
A. A kind of jasper, Plin. 37, 9, 37, § 118 (called, id. 37, 10, 56, § 151, capnitis = καπνίτης).—
B. A kind of chrysolite; prob. our smoky topaz, Plin. 37, 9, 44, § 128.
