Dossuarius

or Dorsuarius. A name given to any animal carrying burdens on its back (Varr. R. R. ii. 6 and 10). It carried its load either by means of panniers (clitellae) or the pack-saddles (sagmae),

whence we read of equus sagmarius. Hence came the German Saum-pferd and the English sumpterhorse.
