Argyraspĭdes
(
ἀργυράσπιδες). A division of the Macedonian army, who
were so called because they carried shields covered with silver plates. They were held in high
honour by Alexander the Great, after whose death they went over to Antigonus. Livy mentions
them as the royal cohort in the army of Antigonus. The Roman emperor Alexander Severus had in
his army a body of men who were called
argyroaspides. (Lamprid.
Alex. Sev. 50.)
