Aristodēmus

Ἀριστόδημος).


1.

A descendant of Heracles, son of Aristomachus, brother of Temenus and Cresphontes, and father of Eurysthenes and Procles. He was killed at Naupactus by a flash of lightning, just as he was setting out on the expedition into the Peloponnesus, and his two sons obtained Sparta, which would have fallen to him.


2.

A Messenian, the chief hero in the First Messenian War. He sacrificed his own daughter to save his country. He was afterwards elected king in place of Euphaës; and continued the war against the Spartans, till at length, finding resistance hopeless, he put an end to his life on the tomb of his daughter, about B.C. 723.
