Campus Scelerātus
A place within the walls of Rome, near the Porta Collina, where Vestal Virgins who had lost
their chastity were buried alive (
Liv.viii. 15). It was unlawful to
bury the dead within the city, or to slay a vestal; but both these restrictions were evaded by
