Cercōpes
(
Κέρκωπες). Droll and thievish gnomes who robbed Heracles
in his sleep. Some place them at Thermopylae; others at Oechalia in Euboea, or in Lydia. (See
Herod. vii. 216, and the article Melampygus.) A poem entitled
Κέρκωπες was ascribed to Homer. (Cf. Müller,
Dorier, ii. 12.10.)
