Charis
(
Χάρις). A name applied by Homer (
Il. xviii. 382) to the wife of Hephaestus. In the
Odyssey, on the other hand (viii. 267), Aphrodité is named as his
spouse. It amounts to the same thing in the figurative explanation of the myth, since Grace
and Beauty were both regarded as the characteristics of Hephaestus's labours. See
