Evadné
(
Εὐάδνη). A daughter of Iphis or Iphicles of Argos, who
slighted the addresses of Apollo, and married
Capaneus (q.v.), one of the seven chiefs who went against Thebes. When her husband had
been struck with thunder by Zeus for his blasphemies and impiety, and his ashes had been
separated from those of the rest of the Argives, she threw herself on his burning pile and
perished in the flames (
Verg. Aen. vi. 447;
Theb. xii. 800).
