Feretrius

A surname of Iupiter, derived from ferire, “to strike”; for persons who took an oath called upon Iupiter to strike them if they swore falsely as they struck the victim which they sacrificed. Others derived it from ferre, because people dedicated (ferebant) to him the spolia opima. See Fest. s. h. v.; Livy, i. 10; Propert. iv. 10, 46.
