Mamurra

A Roman knight, born at Formiae. He was the commander of the engineers (praefectus fabrum) in Iulius Caesar's army in Gaul, and amassed great riches. Horace calls Formiae, in ridicule, Mamurrarum urbs, from which we may infer that the name of Mamurra had become a by-word of contempt (Hor. Sat. i. 5, 37).
