Oroetes

（Ὀροίτης). A Persian who, under Cyrus and Cambyses, was satrap of Sardis. In B.C. 522 he decoyed Polycrates (q. v.) into his power, and put him to death (Herod.i. 69Herod., iii. 39; Thuc.i. 18). He was himself executed by order of Darius, who suspected his loyalty (Herod.iii. 120).
