Popŭlus

A collective name for the whole body of Roman citizens of whatever rank or class. Originally it is likely that only the patrician Romans were regarded as fully possessed of citizenship; but from the time of the establishment of the Republic (B.C. 507) the plebeians were also restored as a part of the populus Romanus. See Civitas; Comitia; Patricii; Plebs; Quirites; Suffragium.
