Saxum Quadrātum

A rock of volcanic formation, so called from the rectangular masses into which its native fissures divide themselves. The earlier buildings at Rome are made of this material—e. g. the so-called Mamertine Prison, the Cloaca Maxima, and the substructure of the Capitol (Livy, vi. 4, 12).
