Sthenĕlus
(
Σθένελος).
1.
The son of Perseus and Andromeda, king of Mycenae, and husband of Nicippe, by whom he
became the father of Alcinoë, Medusa, and Eurystheus.
2.
The son of Androgeos, and grandson of Minos. He accompanied Heracles from Paros on his
expedition against the Amazons, and, together with his brother Alcaeus, he was appointed by
Heracles ruler of Thasos.
3.
The son of Actor, likewise a companion of Heracles in his expedition against the
Amazons.
4.
The son of Capaneus and Evadné, was one of the Epigoni, by whom Thebes was
taken, and commanded the Argives under Diomedes in the Trojan War, being the faithful friend
and companion of Diomedes.
5.
The father of Cycnus, who was metamorphosed into a swan. Hence we find the swan called by
Ovid
Stheneleïa volucris and
Stheneleïa
proles.
6.
A tragic poet, contemporary with Aristophanes, who attacked him in the
Wasps.
