Teuta
(
Τεῦτα). The wife of Agron, king of the Illyrians. She
assumed the sovereign power on the death of her husband, B.C. 231. In consequence of the
injuries inflicted by the piratical expeditions of her subjects upon the Italian merchants,
the Romans sent two ambassadors to demand satisfaction, but she not only refused to comply
with their demands, but caused the younger of the two brothers to be assassinated on his way
home. War was now declared against her by the Romans. The greater part of
her territory was soon conquered, and she was obliged to sue for peace, which was granted to
her (B.C. 228), on condition of her giving up the greater part of her dominions (Polyb. ii.
9-12).
