Chernĭbon

or Cheironiptron (χέρνιβον, χειρόνιπτρον). A basin for holding the Iustral water at a sacrifice, or, in general, for washing the hands. The water, whether sacrificial or not, was called χέρνιψ. The bowl was sometimes of silver and sometimes of gold. The shape was round, and both shallow and deep ones have been found. The pure Latin name is malluvium.
