ANAGNOSTAE

ANAGNOSTAE also called Lectores, were slaves, who were employed by the educated Romans in reading to them during meals, the bath, and at other times. (Cic. Att. 1.1. 2, Fam. 5.9, 2; Nep. Att. 14; Suet. Aug. 78; Mart. 3.50; Plin. Ep. 1.15, 3.5, 14, 9.36; Gel. 3.19.)
