SCOPAE

SCOPAE a broom (scopae virgeae, Cato, Cat. Agr. 156: cf. Hor. Sat. 2.4, 81). These brooms were made commonly of the “wild myrtle” or butcher's broom (ρυσξυς) and of the tamarisk (Plin. Nat. 23.166, 16.108), but also of myrtle (Eur. Ion 121), and in richer houses. at Rome of palm-twigs. (Hor. Sat. 2.4, 83; Mart. 14.82; cf. Juv. 14.60; Becker-Göll, Gallus, 1.35.)
