ACHERI´NI
Eth.
ACHERI´NI the inhabitants of a small town in Sicily, mentioned only by Cicero among the victims of the oppressions of Verres. Its position is quite uncertain; whence modern scholars propose to read either Scherini, or
ACHERINI from ACHETUM, a town supposed to be mentioned by Silius Italicus (
14.268); but the “pubes liquentis
Acheti” (or
Achaeti, as the name stands in the best MSS.) of that author would seem to indicate a river rather than a town.
There is, however, no authority for either emendation. (
Cic. Ver. 3.43; Zumpt
ad loc.; Orell.
Onomast. p. 6; Cluver.
Sicil. p. 381.)
