AMI´SIA

AMI´SIA or AMI´SIUS (Ἀμάσιος or Ἀμασία, the Ems), a river in northern Germany, rising in the hills of the Weser, and emptying itself into the German Ocean near the town of Emden. The river was well known to, and navigated by the Romans. In B.C. 12, Drusus fought on it a naval battle against the Bructeri. (Mela, 3.3; Plin. Nat. 4.14, who calls the river Amisius; Tac. Ann. 1.60, 63, 70, 2.23, who calls it Amisia; Strab. p. 290; Ptolem. 2.11; comp. Ledebur, Land u. Vold der Bructerer, p. 180.)
