AQUAE TAURI
Eth.
AQUAE TAURI another of the numerous watering-places of Etruria, situated about three miles NE. of Centnmcellae (
Civita Vecchia). They are now called
Bagni di Ferrata. The thermal waters here appear to have been in great vogue among the Romans of the Empire, so that a town must have grown up on the spot, as we find the “Aquenses cognomine Taurini” mentioned by Pliny (
3.5. s. 8) among the separate communities of Etruria.
The baths are described by Rutilius, who calls them Tauri Thermae, and ascribes their name to their accidental discovery by a bull. (Rutil.
Itin. 1.249--260; Tab. Peut.; Cluver.
Ital. p. 486.)
