AQUAE TAURI

Eth. AQUAE TAURI another of the numerous watering-places of Etruria, situated about three miles NE. of Centnmcellae (Civita Vecchia). They are now called Bagni di Ferrata. The thermal waters here appear to have been in great vogue among the Romans of the Empire, so that a town must have grown up on the spot, as we find the “Aquenses cognomine Taurini” mentioned by Pliny (3.5. s. 8) among the separate communities of Etruria. The baths are described by Rutilius, who calls them Tauri Thermae, and ascribes their name to their accidental discovery by a bull. (Rutil. Itin. 1.249--260; Tab. Peut.; Cluver. Ital. p. 486.)
