It is mentioned in the wanderings of the children of Israel (Numb.
33.35); and is celebrated as the naval arsenal of Solomon and Jehoshaphat. (1 Kings,
9.26, 22.48.) The Arabic historian Makrizi speaks of an ancient city ‘Asyûn near Ailah. (Burckhardt's Syria,
