COLLOPS MAGNUS

COLLOPS MAGNUS or CULLU (Κόλλοψ μέγας Κόλλου, Ptol. 4.3.3; Chulli Municipium, Itin. Ant. p. 19; Chullu, Tab. Pent.; Chulla, Solin. 29; Collo, Ru.), a city of Numidia, upon a headland on the W. side of the Sinus Olcachites (Bay of Storah), E. of the Pr. Tretum, and 50 M. P. west of Rusicada, celebrated for its purple-dyeing establishments, and probably, therefore, a Phoenician colony. (Brun, Africa, p. 214.) Ptolemy mentions a Κόλλοψ μίκρος, considerably to the E. of this, in a position apparently near the opposite side of the bay. (Ptol. ibid. § 4.)
