CURICTA
CURICTA (
Plin. Nat. 3.21. s. 25;

Strab. ii. p.123, ad fin., vii. p. 315), an island off the coast of Illyricum, now called
Karek, or
Veglia, a little south of the Absyrtides.
According to Ptolemy it contained two towns, Fulvinium (
Φουλφίνιον) and Curicum (
Κούρικον). “
Veglia has excellent harbours; and the valleys, if cultivated, might be productive as of old, when the island was rich in timber and pasture land, and produced abundance of grain, oil, and wine. The Illyrian snails, mentioned by Pliny (
9.56), are very numerous in
Veglia. It was during a long period an independent state, until ceded to Venice in the fifteenth century.” (Wilkinson,
