DIA´NIUM
DIA´NIUM (
Ἀρτεμίσιον:
Giannuti), a small island off the coast of Etruria, immediately opposite to the Mons Argentarius or promontory of Cosa.
It is distant 7 geog. miles from the nearest point of the mainland, and 8 from the neighbouring island of Igilium. Pliny calls it “Dianium quam Artemisiam Graeci dixere:” it is evidently the same which is called Artemita by Stephanus (
Ἀρτεμίτα, νῆσος Τυρρηνικὴ, Steph. s. v.), but it is probable this should be
Ἀρτεμίσιον. The modern name of
Giannuti is a corruption of the Latin Dianium. (Plin 3.6. s. 12; Mela, 2.7.19. )
