GIRGASHITES

Eth. GIRGASHITES (Eth. Γεργεσαῖοι), one of the seven idolatrous nations descended from Canaan (Gen. 10.16), and dispossessed by the children of Israel (Josh. 24.11). They do not occur in the lists in Exodus, 3.8, 17, or Deuteronomy, 20.17; nor is there any indication of their position in Palaestine. Dr. Wells supposes them to have been a family of the tribe of the Hivites; as in nine out of ten places where the nations of Canaan are reckoned they are omitted, while in the tenth, where they are inserted, the Hivites are omitted.
