HADRIANUTHE´RAE

HADRIANUTHE´RAE (Ἁδριάνου θήραι), a town of Mysia, on the road from Ergasteria to Miletopolis, was built by the emperor Hadrian to commemorate a successful hunt which he had had in the neighbourhood. (D. C. 69.10; Spartian, Hadr. 20.) This town, of which we possess coins from the reign of Hadrian onwards, is identified by Sestini (Viaggi Diversi, p. 135) with the village of Trikala, one hour and a half from Soma. (Comp. G. Cedren. i. p. 437, ed. Bonn; Aristid. i. p. 500.) It seems to have been a place of some note; for it was the see of a bishop, and on its coins a senate is mentioned. (Hierocl. p. 6.)
