HARMATE´LIA

HARMATE´LIA (τὰ Ἁρμαρήλια, Diod. 17.102), a place probably in the Paenjáb, which Diodorus describes as the last of the cities of the Brachmanes which fell into the hands of Alexander the Great. The people were a very warlike race, and made a gallant stand. They made use of poisoned arrows. See also Strabo (xv. p.723), who does not, however, mention this place by name, though he alludes to an incident which, according to Diodorus, happened there. The exact position of this place. has not been determined; but it was most likely in the territory of the Malli (now Multán).
