HARMOZEIA

HARMOZEIA (Ἁρμόζεια, Ind. c. 33; Armuzia, Plin. Nat. 6.23. s. 27), the district surrounding Harmuza, the port at which Nearchus's fleet arrived on their return from India, and which was situated in the SE. corner of Carmania. There can be no doubt that the name of the district Harmozeia, of the port Harmuza, and of the promontory Harmozon at the entrance of the harbour, are all derived from the name of the Persian good spirit Hormuzd or Auramazda, which name has been preserved in the present Ormuz, the name of an island off the site of the former port. The neighbouring land is now called Moghistán. The Anamis or Andanis flowed through Harmozeia into the sea at Harmuza. Its present name is Ibrahám Rúd.
