HA´RPASUS
HA´RPASUS (
Ἅρπασος: the reading
Ἅρπαγος, in
Diod. 14.29, is faulty), a river which the Ten Thousand crossed (400 feet broad) from the territory of the Chalybes, who were, separated from the Scythini by this, river. (
Xen. Anab. 4.7. 17) This, river, which has been identified by several writers with the
Arpa-Châï, a northern affluent of the Araxes, and forming the E. boundary of
Kars, is more probably represented by the
Tchórúk-Sú (Jorák), as Colonel Chesney (
Exped. Euphrat. vol. ii. p. 231) and Mr. Grote (
Hist. of Greece, vol. ix. p. 161) suppose.
