HA´RPASUS

HA´RPASUS (Ἅρπασος: the reading Ἅρπαγος, in Diod. 14.29, is faulty), a river which the Ten Thousand crossed (400 feet broad) from the territory of the Chalybes, who were, separated from the Scythini by this, river. (Xen. Anab. 4.7. 17) This, river, which has been identified by several writers with the Arpa-Châï, a northern affluent of the Araxes, and forming the E. boundary of Kars, is more probably represented by the Tchórúk-Sú (Jorák), as Colonel Chesney (Exped. Euphrat. vol. ii. p. 231) and Mr. Grote (Hist. of Greece, vol. ix. p. 161) suppose.
