MARIO´NIS

MARIO´NIS (Μαριωνίς). Two towns of this name are mentioned by Ptolemy (2.11.27) in the northwest of Germany. As the name seems to indicate a maritime town, it has been inferred that one of them was the modern Hamburg, or Marne at the mouth of the Elbe, and the other Lübeck or Wismar. But nothing certain can be said about the matter.
