MATIE´NI MONTES

MATIE´NI MONTES (τὰ Ματιηνὰ ὄρη, Hdt. 1.189, 202, 5.52), the ridge of mountains which forms the back-bone or centre of Matiana, doubtless part of the mountain range of Kurdistáan, in the neighbourhood of Ván. Herodotus makes them the watershed from which flowed the Gyndes and the [p. 2.296]Araxes, which is giving them too extended a range from N. to S. (1.189, 202).
