OPHRAH

A city of Benjamin, written
Ἐφραθὰ by the LXX. (
Joshua, 18.23) and
Γοφερὰ (1
Sam. 13.17).
It is placed by Eusebius and S. Jerome v. M.P. east of Bethel. (
Onomast. s. v. Aphra.) Dr. Robinson says that this accords well with the position of
Et-Taiyibeh, a village of Greek Christians, on a conical hill on a high ridge of land, which would probably not have been left unoccupied in ancient times. (

Ophrah of the Abiezrites (
Ἐφραθὰ πατσὸς τοῦ Ἐσδαί, LXX.;
Judges, 6.11, 24, 8.27; in ver. 32.
Ἀβὶ Ἐσδρί), a town in the half-tribe of Manasseh, west of Jordan, the native place of Gideon, where also he was buried. [
