PONS CAMPA´NUS

PONS CAMPA´NUS a bridge on the Via Appia, by which that celebrated road crossed the little river Savo, a short distance from its mouth. It was 3 miles distant from Sinuessa (erroneously given as 9 in the Jerusalem Itinerary), and evidently derived its name from its being the frontier between Campania and Latium, in the more extended sense of the latter name. It is mentioned by Pliny (14.6. s. 8.), as well as the Itineraries (Tab. Peut.; Itin. Hier. p. 611); and Horace tells us that Maecenas and his companions halted for the night in a villa adjoining it, on their journey from Rome to Brundusium. (Hor. Sat. 1.5. 45.)
