PONS MOSAE
PONS MOSAE in northern Gallia, is mentioned by Tacitus (
Tac. Hist. 4.66), but there is nothing said to show where this bridge was. A Roman road ran from Aduatuca (
Tongern) across the Mosa (
Maas) past Juliacum (
Juliers) to Colonia (
Cologne).
It is very probable that the Pons Mosae was on this route, and that it was at
Maastricht. The termination
tricht is a corruption of the Roman word Trajectum. [
