PONS MOSAE

PONS MOSAE in northern Gallia, is mentioned by Tacitus (Tac. Hist. 4.66), but there is nothing said to show where this bridge was. A Roman road ran from Aduatuca (Tongern) across the Mosa (Maas) past Juliacum (Juliers) to Colonia (Cologne). It is very probable that the Pons Mosae was on this route, and that it was at Maastricht. The termination tricht is a corruption of the Roman word Trajectum. [TRAJECTUM]
