SATYRI MONUMENTUM

SATYRI MONUMENTUM (τὸ Σατύρου μνῆμα, Strab. xi. p.494), a monument consisting of a vast mound of earth, erected in a very conspicuous situation on a promontory on the E. side of the Cimmerian Bosporus, 90 stadia S. of Achilleum, It was in honour of a king of Bosporus, whom Dubois de Montpéreux identifies with Satyrus I., who reigned B.C. 407--393. (Voyage autour du Caucase, v. p. 48.) The same authority (lb. p. 36) identifies the mound with the hill Koukuoba.
