TAGASTE

TAGASTE or TAGESTENSE OPP. (Plin. Nat. 5.4. s. 4), a town of Numidia, whose spot is now marked by the ruins at Tajilt on the Oued Hamise or Sugerast, a tributary of the river Mejerda. (Itin. Ant. p. 44.) Tagaste is particularly distinguished by having been the birthplace of St. Augustine. (Aug. Conf. 2.3.)
